Bridge the Gap (BTG) founded in 1999, working in partnership with the Division of Children and Family Services, (DCFS) began donating gifts to children in foster care during the Holiday Season. After a few years, the program expanded. Bridge the Gap had a new vision - to enrich the lives of children in foster care and "to give every child a childhood".
In 2001, BTG began filling "wishes". Most things children take for granted (clothing, a bicycle, school supplies, a baseball mitt, graduation needs) are often void in the lives of foster children. By providing the "extras", children feel better about themselves and the world in which they live. They can see themselves as someone other thatn a victim and are given the tools for a happy, healthy, successful life.
In 2001 and 2002, BTG sponsored a summer horse camp for foster children. Each year, 15 youth spent five days learning to care for, groom, and ride their own horse. For many, this was a dream come true.
In 2005, BTG stepped up during the State financial crisis, and began to supply new clothing for every child removed from their home. The "Entrance Program" serves an average of 20-25 children per month, with new clothing, school supplies, hygiene items, ect.
Bridge the Gap continues to partner with DCFS to support children in foster care. By restoring hope and building self-esteem, Bridge the Gap is helping children reach their potential as stable, self-supporting community members. |
